The Rev. Dr. Walter J. Smith, S.J. has served as President and CEO of HealthCare Chaplaincy since September 1993, after serving as its executive vice president since July 1991. Father Smith joined The Chaplaincy’s senior management team after a distinguished academic career, which included university and professional school teaching and administration. As a clinician, Father Smith specialized in end-of-life care and has published numerous articles and two books in this field. He serves as a trustee of several national non-profit health care and advocacy organizations and institutions of higher learning.

Claire Haaga Altman, Executive Vice President and COO, has been leading entrepreneurial projects in the non profit sector for over 30 years. Claire developed the paratransit system for persons with disabilities +nyc (now access a ride), a construction company employing ex-offenders, and a housing development company that developed over $250 million of affordable housing. Claire served on the HealthCare Chaplaincy board before joining the staff in the fall of 2008 to lead the development of HealthCare Chaplaincy's new headquarters and innovative assisted living residence.

The Rev. George Handzo, Vice President, Pastoral Care Leadership and Practice, has been a part of HealthCare Chaplaincy for over three decades, first as a chaplain at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and later as an esteemed member of The Chaplaincy’s management team. Rev. Handzo currently heads HealthCare Chaplaincy's entire clinical program and its Consulting Service, which offers a full range of options to help medical institutions across the country build or expand an existing multifaith pastoral care department. He is a board certified chaplain and a certified six sigma black belt.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Montonye is Acting Vice President, Academic Affairs and Director of the Department of Clinical Pastoral Education. He is a board certified chaplain and a certified clinical pastoral education supervisor. Before joining in April 2008, he served as Manager of Social and Spiritual Services and ACPE Supervisor at Baystate Medical Center, Director of Training at Hartford Hospital, and Director of Humanities and Pastoral Care at the Connecticut Hospice. He is a graduate of Hartford Seminary with a Doctor of Ministry; Yale Divinity School with a Masters of Divinity and Masters of Sacred Theology; Southern Connecticut State University with a Masters of Science in Education; and the University of California, San Diego, with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He was ordained by the United Church of Christ and has served as a pastor to several New England congregations. Martin has published articles on palliative care, spiritual assessment and chaos theory as an approach to teaching, learning and education. Throughout his career he has been an advocate for integrative medicine and participated in the design of several programs.

Nicholas L. Grimaldi, Vice President, Advancement, brings to The Chaplaincy nearly 20 years of fundraising experience. He was previously director of development for several prominent New York City organizations: The Legal Aid Society; Fountain House, Inc.; Hartley House, Inc., and The Nikolais/Louis Foundation for Dance, Inc.

Kenneth C. Thompson, MBA, CPA has joined HealthCare Chaplaincy as chief financial officer. For the past decade, Ken has worked in the not-for-profit sector in the fields of finance and accounting. Most recently he served as vice president, finance and administration at the United Nations Association of the USA. Previously he was assistant director, administration and finance, at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University, and the deputy controller of the New School University. Ken began his career in the public accounting sector.

Edward Haran, Director, Human Resources has held senior positions in human resources at SUNY Stony Brook, Queensborough Community College, Southampton Hospital and Eastern Long Island Hospital. He joined HealthCare Chaplaincy in February 2005.

Jim Siegel, Director of Marketing & Communications, has more than 30 years of experience in the private and not-for-profit sectors. Previously he was program director for the online Parents Resource Center at the Partnership for a Drug-Free America and senior vice president at Young & Rubicam. Jim has served on the boards of the substance abuse treatment and prevention organization Veritas, and Marketing Executives Networking Group, and has been an active volunteer as a congregant at Central Synagogue in Manhattan.
