SCA University of Theology and Spirituality
The SCA University of Theology and Spirituality (UTS) is a center for higher learning that educates and assists in the development of forward-thinking leaders and practitioners of spiritual care. This progressive, interdenominational, interfaith, and inter-spiritual institution distinguishes itself from traditional seminaries by being a university of theology and spirituality. We have no stated intention to prepare students for ordination in any specific denomination or faith tradition but, rather, to prepare students to provide clinical spiritual care. UTS also prepares those interested in multi-faith ordination in chaplaincy and spiritual care. The University offers Master’s and Doctoral degree programs in Spiritual Care, Chaplaincy, Spiritual Direction, Thanatology, Divinity, and Clinical Pastoral Psychotherapy. All courses are designed to assist busy professionals by offering accessible, online courses that work around their schedules and from their location

SCA Learning Center
The curriculum and courses of the SCA Learning Center are based on standardized, evidence-based scope of practice and evidence-based quality indicators developed by interdisciplinary panels of experts from the fields of chaplaincy, medicine, nursing, psychotherapy, palliative care, social work, research and policy in the U.S. and overseas. SCA offers two certificate courses in palliative care: Fundamentals of Spiritual Care in Palliative Care (PC1) and Advanced Practice Spiritual Care in Palliative Care (PC2). These courses are self-guided. Students who successfully complete the course receive a certificate of completion.

SCA’s Spiritual Care Grand Rounds are regularly-scheduled 90-minute long webinars from experts with learning objectives that can be applied immediately to one’s professional practice. During the live webinar participants can ask questions via chat. The curriculum covers important aspects of relevant topics in blocks of two to four webinars. Participants in a live webinar session will receive 1.5 hours and a certificate of completion. Some webinars are eligible for CNEs as well.

SCA offers three resources to train volunteers at chaplaincy department. These resources, whether in print, video, or self-guided courses, allow chaplains to expand the reach of their spiritual care by engaging volunteers, whether lay or clergy.

The Spiritual Care Associations’ Chaplaincy Management Training Program is designed to meet the needs of current or aspiring directors of chaplaincy/spiritual care departments of any size. This includes both inpatient and outpatient operations as well as remote clinics. In addition to the online courses, instruction and webinar training benefits of the program, candidates will also have the opportunity to virtually meet other directors or aspiring directors and create a network of peers. Successful candidates will receive the Chaplaincy Management Certificate. This program is offered twice-per-year every January and September.

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
CPE is a form of spiritual care training whereby students are taught to observe, listen, communicate and more effectively respond to and attend to people’s spiritual needs. CPE is offered through our educational partner, the Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training (ICPT). ICPT’s CPE program utilizes SCA standardized evidence-based curriculum. CPE cohorts are offered four times per year.
